NZ: flight from LAX to Auckland

After parking our truck in Joe’s Airport Parking next to the Homewood Suites by Hilton hotel, we checked in to the hotel for the night.

We did that to avoid any time crunch between dropping off our coach for storage, and checking in for the flight. Though as it turned out, we didn’t really need to do that. But better safe that sorry; if we had any significant delay with the storage, or horrible LA traffic, we could have been (more) stressed.

The hotel room was fine; mainly paying for the location, near the airport:

The hotel (and car park) offered a free shuttle to the airport:

Once there, we loaded our big pile of luggage onto a cart:

Luggage

We arrived at the airport at around 11:00 (as we had to check out of the hotel), but it turned out that the Air New Zealand check-in counter didn’t open until 15:05, so we had to wait with all our luggage for four hours:

In retrospect it might have been more comfortable to wait at least part of that time at the hotel (with them storing our luggage for us), but oh well.

Once we finally got checked in and through security (which was a breeze), we had another three hours to wait till boarding. Jenn killed some time by getting a back massage:

Landed about 12 hours after taking off at 04:45 NZ time, and easy customs and immigration (since I’m a citizen and Jenn’s a permanent resident), and our luggage was waiting for us in the baggage claim (priority unloading for Premium Economy) at 05:05:

We were out of the arrivals area so quickly, we were out before my brother Neville and his wife Karan had arrived, but my other brother Gavin was there to meet us. We met up with N & K shortly afterwards, and loaded up our bags, then headed back to their place, where we were to stay for a couple of nights.

It was very early, and of course we didn’t sleep super great on the flight, so we spent a couple of hours having a nap. But then we went out with them to explore a bit; stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on our first day in New Zealand.

Club Cat boarding

In preparation for our big trip to New Zealand (blog posts coming up), we booked Paladin in a cattery in Los Angeles called Club Cat.

We took him there the day before we stored the coach, along with his food, cat bed, and carrier:

His suite had a view box above the door, and platforms inside:

They also offered a web cam where we could watch him whenever we liked:

Plus they emailed “postcards” about every other day, with a cute message “from” him and a few photos, as shown in this post.

They have a large playroom with a bunch of toys, but he didn’t like that, perhaps because it was too open; he’s used to smaller spaces:

He kept asking to go back to his room:

So after trying the playroom a few times, we switched to fur therapies using a glove:

He really enjoyed that:

They were amused by his happy drool:

He got lots of pats and attention too:

Other than his dislike of the playroom, he seemed to enjoy his stay, and was well taken care of. But he was happy to see us when we picked him up after our trip, and happy to be home again.

We’d be happy to board him there again.

US Virgin Islands accommodations

While in the US Virgin Islands, we stayed at an Airbnb in the Point Pleasant Resort on Saint Thomas.

Here’s a map, with a marker for the resort where we stayed:

Jenn’s review of the Airbnb:

This was a fantastic place to stay during our trip to St. Thomas and Alan was a very gracious and responsive host. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. We particularly enjoyed the gorgeous views right on the water and the easy walk to restaurants, which was just perfect after a day of sightseeing. Watching the pelicans dive for fish in the bay and the iguanas sunning themselves was wonderfully entertaining.

The Airbnb condo had a great view, above the water, and a short walk to restaurants, a swimming pool, and beaches:

A third stay in an Airbnb apartment

As mentioned yesterday, we had another appointment with the National Indoor RV Center in Phoenix, Arizona to do some upgrades and repairs on our coach (I’ll probably post about some later). So after dropping our coach off there, we headed to an Airbnb apartment near downtown Phoenix for the week.

Here’s the listing for “The Retreat”.

Jenn’s review:

Jackie was a great host. She had good communication and was very attentive to anything we might have needed. This super cute historic studio apartment was the perfect oasis close to downtown. We could walk to dinner every day and never have to have the same thing twice. We really loved the courtyard and pool and enjoyed soaking in the Arizona sun.

It’s a small studio apartment, smaller than our coach, but cosy and cute:

Jenn brought her PS5, which we hooked up to the TV:

Most of the time, I sat on the rather uncomfortable couch to work:

The floor was interesting, wood surrounded by tile (with a central rug):

Like everything else, the bathroom was tiny, smaller than the bathroom in our coach:

The front (only) door blinds had a missing slat, leaving a gap; we mentioned it to the host, so hopefully will be repaired:

One of the nice features of this place was it was a couple of minutes walk to several restaurants, so we didn’t need to drive anywhere during our stay (which was just as well, as parking was rather tight).

It was a cute place to stay for a few days.

Hotel stay while our coach was at Cummins

While our coach was at Cummins awaiting diagnostics, we stayed at a nearby pet-friendly La Quinta hotel:

A pretty basic room:

Paladin wasn’t keen on the car journey, but settled in at the hotel after a while:

The room did have a view of a nearby mountain, behind another hotel:

Also a less scenic view of the freeway:

Being in a hotel room without kitchen facilities, we ate out for dinners and breakfasts (and ate leftovers for lunch). The first night, we walked across the road to a Claim Jumper restaurant (my first experience of one):

There was an IHOP (International House of Pancakes) next door to the hotel, so we went there for breakfast:

For lunch, we had leftover pizza. Then for our second dinner, we went to a nearby Olive Garden:

For our second breakfast, I went and got takeout from IHOP while Jenn had a work meeting:

After that, we were able to go pick up our coach from Cummins, so we loaded our stuff back in our truck and headed back there:

The Cummins visit and hotel stay was an unexpected and unwelcome hassle and expense, but it’s all part of the RV lifestyle. As someone said, plans should be made of jello; when things go wrong, we just need to handle it as best as possible.

Coach to NIRVC and a second stay in an Airbnb apartment

We had an appointment with the National Indoor RV Center in Phoenix, Arizona to fix the driver chair issue, a slide-out glide issue, and a bunch of other stuff. So we drove the short 22 miles (half an hour) from the nearby Buckeye campground to NIRVC to drop off the coach. Here’s the route (going left to right):

The waiting room:

We had the option of sleeping in our coach on-site (with a power hookup), and hanging out in that waiting room while it was being worked on, but that wouldn’t really work with a cat, and we’d be more comfortable staying somewhere else.

So again, we rented an Airbnb apartment; see that listing for more information. Here are a few pictures:

The carport was a bit tight for our truck. The apartment was upstairs:

We’ve recently booked a third Airbnb for another visit to NIRVC in March, to (hopefully) finish off the items on the list.

A stay in an Airbnb apartment

A temporary change: we had an appointment for some work on our coach, so like when we got it serviced up in the Seattle area, we needed to stay somewhere else for a time. (Actually, we could have stayed in the coach for most of the time, but it’s problematic with a cat, and less comfortable with the slides in and other limitations.) So we rented an Airbnb.

We departed Gila Bend, Arizona, and drove to Phoenix, Arizona. Just a short 63 mile journey this time, only an hour. We had chosen the Sonoran Desert RV Park in part for its reasonable proximity to Phoenix, so we could deliver the coach by 09:00. Here’s the route map (the leg in the top-left corner was part of the route getting to that park):

The Airbnb was a nice two-bedroom apartment, just 20 minutes away from the shop. See that listing for more photos, but here are a few.

And yes, Paladin stayed here too; being cat-friendly was one of the criteria. He adapted without difficulty:

The apartment felt so spacious after living in a motorhome! It was nice to have a bit more room to spread out, and a full-sized shower. Being in a big city was different, too. But it was only temporary; we’re not yet ready to give up the freedom of taking our house with us as we explore the country. And with a cat, it won’t be the last time we stay elsewhere; we already have another Airbnb booked for some more work on the coach at a different place in January.
