Baseball: Tacoma Rainiers vs Reno Aces

We attended a game of the Tacoma Rainiers vs the Reno Aces at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, along with Jenn’s father, plus her brothers and their significant others.

An interactive map of the stadium and environs; there are two separate entrances and parking lots, and if you go out the wrong exit, it seems that you have to walk around the outfield to get back to your car (ask me how I know):

Baseball: Pittsburgh Pirates vs Chicago White Sox

We did a pregame tour and attended a game of the Pittsburgh Pirates vs the Chicago White Sox at the Pirates’ ballpark, PNC Park.

Jenn’s game summary:

We took a tour of the park before the game, and it’s a lovely ballpark. A beautiful view of the skyline and numerous neat touches throughout—plantings and artwork that tie the present to the past. The team has a rich history and shows much respect for its roots. The current team, however, is not good. Blown out by the White Sox, who are also one of the worst teams—an embarrassment. Still, the fans show up to root for “the Bucs”. Cute pierogi race between innings and a Warhol cam to salute a famous son of the city.

Baseball: New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners

We attended a couple of games of the New York Yankees vs our Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium in New York.

Jenn’s game summary:

A very nice stadium. Even though it’s not the original one, they imbued it with some classic touches and filled it with old ghosts and memories. The game did not start well for the M’s, with Luke Evans giving up three runs in the first, which wound up being the number of runs they lost by. The Yankees starting pitcher, Schlittler, made his MLB debut and pitched five strong innings, striking out 7. The M’s went deep four times, including Cole Young’s first major league homer. It still wasn’t enough to overcome the early hole, alas. Pleasantly surprised by how friendly all the Yankees fans near us were—they seemed impressed by my scorekeeping.

Baseball: Boston Red Sox vs Cincinnati Reds

After our two tours of Fenway Park, we attended part of a game of the Boston Red Sox vs the Cincinnati Reds.

Jenn’s game summary:

Took two different Fenway tours before the game—one more history-oriented, one where we got to go on the warning track and then watch batting practice from the Green Monster seats. It was pretty fun to watch the homers go over our heads or come very near us. Not a bad vantage for a game, but spendy! We changed our tickets from grandstand seats to loge box ones and got to see three innings before the game was postponed due to severe thunderstorms. A pity, because I was really digging the vibe. The Red Sox did win it the next day.

Baseball: Fenway tours

Interesting tours. In the next post, an actual game.

Baseball: Toronto Blue Jays vs Philadelphia Phillies

We attended a game of the Toronto Blue Jays vs Philadelphia Phillies, playing at the Blue Jay’s ballpark, Rogers Centre, the only MLB team in Canada.

Jenn’s game summary:

Our first domed stadium. They can open the roof, but it was closed due to drizzle and maybe wildfire smoke. A lovely park with excellent food and a vibrant atmosphere. The Blue Jays came out for four runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings each to make total cream cheese of the Phillies, who only scraped together one run. Bassitt recorded his 1100th career strikeout, and Bo Bichette hit his 8th home run of the year. It was a fun game with a bit of local color—they sang a song called “OK Blue Jays” before “Take Me Out To the Ballgame,” and everyone knew the words and gestures, creating a great community vibe.

Baseball: Cleveland Guardians vs Los Angeles Angels

We attended a game of the Cleveland Guardians vs the Los Angeles Angels, playing at the Guardians’ ballpark, Progressive Field.

Jenn’s game summary:

A fun game with some interesting scoring stuff I’d never seen before, including a single that was also an E7 and then an “OAD 3-6-5” with the batter thrown out at third. Also, a delayed HBP call on a final out, so guys were back in the dugout and had to get back out to continue. The Angels struck first with back-to-back homers in the third (just after the above wacky play). Mike Trout got a couple singles and an RBI double, but the Guardians got three homers of their own (José Ramirez, Steven Kwan, and Carlos Santana) with some other hits mixed in to eventually win it 7-5. The food was pretty terrible (dogs were both soggy & burnt?!) but really good nachos and ice cream saved the day.

Baseball: Detroit Tigers vs Boston Red Sox

We attended a game of the Detroit Tigers vs Boston Red Sox, playing at the Tigers ballpark, Comerica Park.

Jenn’s game summary:

The Tigers completed a 3-game sweep of the Red Sox on a pleasant evening in Detroit. Nice stadium with a couple of fun things (carousel with tigers instead of horses and a baseball-themed Ferris wheel). Tarik Skubal pitched very well and efficiently—11 strikeouts and only one walk. Amazing homerun robbery with assist (scoring: F9-8) by the Red Sox to steal a run from Kerry Carpenter that will be in the highlight reels for years. Exciting steal and advance on a throwing error for some 9th inning heroics by the Tigers and a walk-off single to end it—a fun game.
